It seems after we are out of Elementary School, many of us forget about Groundhog Day. It’s always on February 2nd every year, no matter what the day. This is primarily an event in the United States. The major part of the day is when the groundhog comes out of his burrow to predict the weather. If it’s cloudy and the groundhog doesn’t see his shadow, Spring will come early but if it’s sunny and he does see his shadow it’s 6 more weeks of winter for us!
The biggest Groundhog Day celebration is held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Their celebration was already a large event but became even bigger when the town was featured in the 1993 film, Groundhog Day, starring Bill Murray. The Groundhog is known as Punxsutawney Phil.
I’ve taken the liberty of looking up a few other celebrations that take place:
Florida – Mount Dora (they use a hare and adjust the prediction for Floridians regarding hurricanes)
Georgia – Yellow River Game Ranch in Lilburn (General Beau Lee)
Iowa – Des Moines
Massachusetts – Drumlin Farm in Lincoln
New York – Staten Island Zoo (Chuck)
Ohio -Marion (Buckeye Chuck)
Tennessee – Brentwood
Wisconsin – Sun Prairie (Jimmy)
Those are just a few of the celebrations happening this year and typically do happen every year. Not heading out to a groundhog day celebration? Feel free to print off this Groundhog Day Word Search as a part of your celebration of the day!
Is anyone doing anything special this weekend to celebrate Groundhog Day?
